The Concept Behind All-on-4

The All-on-4 dental implant system is a product of Nobel Biocare. Initially part of the family of companies first started by Alfred Nobel (of Nobel Prize fame), Nobel Biocare was one of the original manufacturers of dental implants. Based on the pioneering dental implant work of Swedish researcher Per-Ingvar Brånemark, who installed the first jaw implants in 1965, Nobel Biocare continues to be one of the world’s largest researchers and producers of dental implants.

A Variety of Implant Styles

What makes All-on-4 completely different from other dental implant systems is the wide variety of implant styles that can by used for the patient. In the past, bone grafting was often necessary for installing implants in patients with insufficient jaw bone. That was because almost all implants were designed for vertical installation in the jaw. If the jawbone was not thick enough, more bone was needed via grafting.

All-on-4 provides dentists with implants that are installed at an angle, or closer to horizontally. This takes advantage of the length of the jawbone, and not just its depth. By offering a workaround for shallow jaws, All-on-4 saves many patients the extra time and expense required with bone grafts. It also provides implants in a variety of widths, allowing for the size differences in individual jawbones.

Instant Loading with Dentures

All-on-4 uses four dental implants to support the load of a denture that provides teeth for the entire upper or lower jaw. Just as four screws can support a tremendous amount of weight and force for structural purposes, Nobel Biocare has solved the issue of providing immediate loading when the substrate is bone. In the past, patients might wait a number of months before the dental implant was loaded with a replacement tooth. Now we are able to provide a preliminary denture while the jawbone and gums heal, and the final denture after the the healing process is complete.
