Dental Trauma in Palm Springs, CA
Dental trauma refers to sudden impact and injury to the teeth, gums, tissue, or bones that support your teeth. While dental trauma is more common in younger people due to their generally more active lifestyle, it can occur at all ages and activity levels. Stuff happens!
Common causes of dental trauma include:
- Car accidents
- Workplace accidents
- Slips and falls
- Sports injuries
- Physical violence
If you experience a dental injury, you need to seek professional help immediately! Receiving proper treatment as soon as possible could mean the difference between losing or saving your tooth. Our Tahquitz Dental Group Palm Springs team can help you regain the normal function and appearance of your injured tooth and the surrounding area.
Sports Injuries
Many popular sports involve high velocity impact with players and sports equipment (think sticks and balls). Mouthguards that protect your teeth, gums, jaw, and tongue are highly recommended to reduce the risk of dental injuries when participating in these types of sports. Contact our office to schedule a mouthguard fitting today!
Chipped or Broken Teeth
Chipped or broken teeth are the most common dental injuries. If this happens to you, call our office immediately! Repairs completed within 12 hours of injury produce the best possible results. Be sure to recover as many pieces of the tooth as you can and bring them with you to your appointment. Our dental team attempts to reattach the recovered pieces and if unable, provides recommendations to restore the tooth.
Avulsed (Knocked Out) Tooth
If your tooth has been knocked out, follow these instructions:
- Locate the tooth and rinse it with water while carefully not touching the root.
- If possible, place the tooth back into the socket and hold it in place with your finger or gently bite down on a piece of gauze or a teabag.
- If you are unable to place the tooth back into the socket, then place it in your mouth between your cheek and tongue or place the tooth in a plastic bag with cold milk or your saliva. DO NOT use tap water as this could damage the root.
- Immediately come to our office, preferably within 30 to 60 minutes of the injury. (The sooner the better!)
This advice applies to teeth that are loose as well as those that are knocked out. Loose teeth are lost teeth if something is not done immediately!
