Sedation Dentistry in Palm Springs, CA
Do you suffer from fear of the dental chair? Perhaps you have extreme anxiety or a severe gag reflex. Rest assured that you are not alone! Many Americans postpone dental visits until their oral discomfort surpasses their dread of the visit. If this describes you, the Tahquitz Dental Group Palm Springs has solutions for you to consider.
Topical Pain Management
The majority of our patients find that topical anesthetics like novocaine or xylocaine enable them to have a pain-free dental experience. Dependent on the procedure, we may also administer an injection after applying the topical pain relief. This approach to pain management is easy, has minimal risk, allows the patient to remain conscious throughout the procedure, and is the most cost-effective option.
If topical anesthetics while remaining fully conscious is not for you, then we also offer the following types of sedation.
Inhalation Conscious Sedation
This type of sedation is considered a lighter form of sedation that allows you to be conscious, but very relaxed. Nitrous oxide, commonly called “laughing gas,” is administered through a mask placed over your nose prior to your dental procedure. For most patients, the effects of the gas wear off quickly following the procedure, enabling them to drive themselves home.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedation requires you to take a pill or liquid form of a sedative just prior to your dental procedure. While you will not be fully asleep, most patients become very drowsy and remember very little, if anything, from the process. We monitor your vital signs throughout your treatment, and you continue to breathe on your own. With this type of sedation, you need to have a designated driver, as the effects of the sedative may take the remaining day, or until the next day at the latest, to wear off.
Intravenous Sedation
As indicated by its name, sedatives are directly administered into the bloodstream via an IV. While this is the most costly and complicated form of sedation, it will allow you to be completely “out” during the entire dental process. Patients often choose this option for involved or lengthy procedures. Recovery from this type of sedation takes longer, so somebody will need to drive you home.
