Veneers are not just for the cosmetic treatment of stained or chipped teeth. They can also cover up large gaps between the teeth. They can protect the enamel if there are surface-level cracks. And they also can improve the bite when you have abnormally small or misshapen teeth. But just what are dental veneers?
Dental Veneers — a Covering for Teeth
The word veneer is typically associated with furniture and cabinetry. This type of veneer is a thin, wooden covering used to improve the appearance of a cheaper underlying wood or substrate. The term was first used by the Germans in 1702 as Fornier. Back then, veneers had nothing to do with teeth.
Dental veneers, thin coverings that improve the look of damaged or abnormal teeth, were first made for Hollywood actors in the late 1920’s. Those early veneers did not last long, and it was not until the 1950s that modifications in the preparation process made dental veneers reliable. Up until today, improvements continue to be made in materials and adhesives so that veneers are stronger, more reliable, and more realistic.
Veneers can cover as little as one tooth when needed, or they can improve the appearance of an entire arch of visible teeth. It all depends on what you as the client want to accomplish with your smile. The Tahquitz Dental Group is here to give you the results you desire with the best materials available to you.
Your Choices in Veneers
Your choice in veneers is partially dictated by the problem they need to fix. For some situations, traditional veneers that require a noticeable amount of tooth preparation are required. When we use these porcelain veneers to improve your teeth, the decision is permanent. If the veneers ever need replacement, you should not go without them for any significant length of time. The advantage is that traditional veneers are also very strong and with proper care should last fifteen years, if not longer.
Ultrathin veneers require very little preparation and can technically be removed in the future. Of course, the purpose of veneers is to cover over a dental blemish or problem. So most patients never reach the point where they want their veneers removed. Comfort is not an issue with well-designed and installed veneers. Ultimately, the demands of your teeth based on good dental practice and your choice in appearance are the important factors in whether you should elect for standard or ultrathin veneers.
