Clear aligner technology was first popularized by the Invisalign system. For a long time, this was the only option for aligner orthodontics, but now there are a variety of competing systems. All of them must measure up to the standard in orthodontic treatment, and that is the traditional dental braces. Therefore, let’s examine a recent study that looked at the quality of results achieved with braces and with clear aligners.
Eight International Studies Reviewed
The study reviewed research results from eight different projects that examined over 700 patients, evenly split between clients receiving orthodontic treatment with clear aligners or dental braces. The countries involved included the United States, Italy, Ireland, and China. In four of the studies, braces provided better results, but in the other four, the two therapies were judged to be equally effective. In the end, the review study explained the results in the following manner and concluded that both therapies use effective orthodontic procedures.
Extractions Make a Difference
For patients who need a tooth or teeth extracted to repair a malocclusion, dental braces are the superior method for treatment. Braces were also superior at fixing problems that required rotating a tooth in its socket. On the other hand, clear aligners were generally preferred by patients for three reasons. “Compared with conventional fixed braces, clear aligners allowed for improved esthetics, comfort, and oral hygiene to patients.” And the study postulated that aligners were better at fixing inclination problems with multiple teeth at once. Finally, where extractions are not involved, clear aligners require less time in the dental office and offer a faster treatment period.
The reviewers concluded by stating that “both clear aligners and braces were effective in treating malocclusion.” Also, due to the differences between the advantages of clear aligners versus the advantages of braces, “clinicians should consider the characteristics of these two orthodontic appliances when making treatment decisions.” When you visit the Tahquitz Dental Group for help with orthodontic dental therapy, we will thoroughly examine your teeth and jaws with consideration for your cosmetic goals and your state of oral health.
